Fun Time

Celebration of New Year on this day is more rational, more scientific and more meaningful in Indian context. In peninsular India, this day is celebrated in some form or the other. Gudi Padwa or Samvatsar Padvo is celebrated as the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and Konkanis.

Gudi Padwa is celebrated as Ugadi by the people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Both Gudi Padwa and Ugadi are celebrated on the same day i.e. on the Chaitra shukla pratipada..

Gudi Padwa is Marathi New Year according to Luni-Solar calendar. Luni-Solar calendars consider the position of the Moon and the position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Apart from Luni-Solar calendar, there is Hindu solar calendar which considers only position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Because of that Hindu New Year is celebrated twice in the year with different names and at two different times of the year. The Hindu New Year based on Solar calendar is known as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Orissa, Noba Barsha in West Bengal, 'Vaisakha' in Bihar and 'Pooram Vishu' in Kerala, which falls on 13-14, April, 2016.

Though thorough cleaning of houses and business premises are generally conducted on the occasion of Deepawali, but on the occasion of New Year also, people clean their houses and remove wastes. Owing to Chaitra Navaratri beginning, people observe fast and enjoy festive mood. Since it is harvesting time also, people are charged with energy and vigor of richness.

Traditionally some health oriented, nourishing preparations are made to observe this day. Sanskrit texts suggest some bitter preparations to be prepared on this day consisting of Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves, Jeera, Jaggery, Ajwain etc. This is all time blood purifier and prepares your body to take health related challenges throughout the year. Alternatively, you can take triphala powder also. According to Atharv-Veda –

    Samvatsarasya pratimaam yam tavaam Ratryupasmahe

Saa na aayushmati praja rayasposhen sansrija

On the first day of New Era, everyone should contain the new cloths, the Kesariya [Orange-like coloured] cloths’s Flag having written OM on it, should be hoisting upon the roof of the house and the leaves of Neem Tree (Nimba), black chili and Mishri (Sugar Crystal) would be eaten. This day is also known as “Arogya Pratipada.”

There is also the tradition of visiting family Astrologer to discuss one’s personal issues and listening Varshafal (annual horoscope). People also discuss their planning and actions of the New Year and get astrological approval. According to Muhurta classics, first day of Samvatsar is actually very auspicious. So, take retrospection of last year and on the basis of the suggestions provided by your astrologer, note down your future planning and accordingly use your resources to implement your planning. Take a resolution in an auspicious atmosphere, as new day is a religious day also, make the list of important tasks and use your potential to fructify it.
